Alpinia gingers are commonly known as shell gingers because their blooms resemble a cluster of shells.  Their waxy evergreen leaves may be solid or variegated and provide year round greenery in areas without frost.  Blooms appear in terminal clusters on second year growth.  Their lush foliage makes a tropical effect and they may grow as high as 14 feet.  Alpinias can tolerate more sun than most gingers.
