Spiral reed-like stems give this ginger its name as either spiral gingers or spiral flag. Costus gingers also prefers some sun. Leaves appear from the twisting stem with waxy terminal cones for flowers. This makes a great plant to mixed with foundation plantings for an artistic effect . Costus gingers can reach a height of 8 feet or more.

Costus Speciosus (Crepe Ginger) Leaves spiral around reed-like stem. Flowers appear on top in midsummer consisting of a large red cone with white flowerets blooming out of the cone. The height is 6-7 feet in partial shade. Originated in the East Indies. Very hardy to 10 degrees.
